Over the Holidays there were many experiments at vegetarian cooking in my kitchen. Some dishes came out better than others. One the best dishes I've made a few times because it's so easy, healthy and delishes is red lentil sweet potato curry with quinoa and spinach -- a recipe I adapted from an another blog's adaptation of a NY Time's Thanksgiving article.

curried lentils and sweet potatoes | smitten kitchen: After all of the holiday buzz this curried lentil and sweet potato dish landed exactly on that bridge, a lazy Sunday after a flurry of a holiday weekend. It’s from the New York Times Thanksgiving coverage two weeks ago, from an article by Melissa Clark about vegetarian dishes fitting the meal. But really, it had my name all over it, because the sweet potatoes were made spicy, not saccharine, and the Indian-spiced lentils and greens were exactly the health kick I needed after this weekend of heavy intake, with the ease of a one-pot meal.

I used about double the ginger, skipped the cilantro, lime and jalapeno and used a single chipotle pepper for smokiness instead. Add the end I combined the curry with cooked spinach and served it over quinoa. The spice of the garam massala and ginger pairs incredibly with the natural sweetness of the potato, while the quinoa and spinach makes the dish feel light and refreshing.

So delicious and healthy!

Upgrading to iPhone 4S with Unlimited Data on AT&T

I may be in the minority but I am ecstatic about the new iPhone 4S. The new features could be seen as modest tweaks (faster, more memory, better antenna) but I would argue that they add up to a much richer user experience. As an original iPhone 3G (OG) user, I can attest to the significance of similar "modest" upgrades in the iPhone 3GS. Faster isn't just faster, it's an entirely richer, less frustrating experience. So I've decided to get the new iPhone, but I had a big concern: would I be able to keep my unlimited data plan with AT&T? Would Sprint's unlimited data plan lure AT&T customers who can no longer get the data plan I have (which they have eliminated as of last June).

Until recently all we could do was speculate. Even as the official release nears, many details about data plans for each carrier are nebulous. I'm happy to share what I've learned and confirmed: If you currently have an iPhone with AT&T then you can upgrade your phone and keep your existing data plan. In other words, if you're grandfathered into unlimited data like I am, you do not have to give that up to get the iPhone 4S. Great news! I'm still curious to see what the competition offers. how much the Sprint data plans will cost. However unless they are significantly cheaper, I don't think I will leave AT&T.

Here's a snapshot of the confirmation I got from AT&T (which I later confirmed on the phone with customer service).

UPDATE: You can now pre-order the iPhone 4 from Sprint and see the plan options. Although unlimited data and text with 450 min talk time is only $69, the next screen shows a $10/month premium data charge is required for this device. So at about $80/month before taxes, I'd be paying roughly the same as I do now with the only difference being unlimited texting (I have the cheaper 200 txts for $15 from AT&T). Seems like saving a few dollars a month is not worth giving up faster speeds and my 5000 rollover minutes is like having unlimited voice anyway.

Tonight I attended a screening of Queen of the Sun: What are the Bees Telling Us? This astonishing documentary explores both the problems and solutions in restoring our delicate balance with nature. Bees are the ideal collaborators of life. Their importance to humans, plants, and our ecosystem goes beyond biology and genetics. It's evolutionary aesthetics. What's beautiful to bees is also beautiful to humans: sunflowers, roses, cherry blossoms, etc. Compare that, to say varieties of plants that are pollinated by flies: they smell like rotting meat. This is no accident. Bees have co-evolved with plants and flowers to bring us the most nutritious, sustaining and beautiful sources of food and beauty on the Earth. Flowers learned the perfect combinations of colors and scents to attract the bees, and bees learned how to help plants migrate and fly in the air from their solitary roots in the ground.

One of the adorable subjects featured in the film, an elderly French biodynamic farmer, says that yogis make perfect beekepers because they understand that peace comes from balance and connection to nature. After seeing Queen of the Sun, I am inspired to help make some local honey. I found this description of the magical process linked from the film's website:

"Each time a bee lands on a flower, pollen sticks to its fuzzy body. At the next flower, some of this pollen falls off, while still more attaches to the bee, and that is how plants are pollinated. When the honeybees return to the hive, they treat the nectar with enzymes and spread it throughout the wax cells of the honeycomb to thicken into honey. The argument deniers make is what's called a logical fallacy: If the data shows that temperature does not track CO2, then CO2 must not be responsible for warming the Earth's climate. Correct logic: CO2 is the only validated explanation of trapping warmth on the Earth, yet sometimes there are variability in the correlation between CO2 and temps, therefore other factors must be diminishing the effects. What we're learning now is the release of pollution and particulates into the air has a cooling effect often called "global dimming." As we get better about cleaning up pollution, which is a good thing because of the negative health effects, we're actually going to remove the dimming factors too. In other words, increases in temperature have been artificially muffled...so the warming is going to be a lot worse than we actually thought because of global dimming.

We're running out of time. The Earth is going to be fine. As George Carlin says, it's the people that are fucked.

It happens every year and it seems to be getting worse. We get a big snowstorm on a major metropolitan area and all the sudden people start pointing their finger at Al Gore. "It's snowing, so surely global warming must be a farce designed to make Al Gore rich, poison your kids, bankrupt our governments and turn America into a haven for socialistic gay-sex-and-abortions-for-all loving hippies."

The wrong wing loves to gloat when we get a lot of snow. To be fair, for the average layperson (emphasis added) there is a very slightly counter-intuitive notion about having a warming climate yet seeing more snow. So here's a basic lesson that I am sad to have to explain again this year: weather is what happens next weekend in Chicago, climate is what happens over a long period of time covering a large area. Saying that global warming doesn't exist because we get a lot of snow, or even many many bad snow storms, is like saying that diet and exercise doesn't work because I ran for an hour and I still have a fat ass.

But don't take my word for it, listen to what scientists are getting tired of repeating year after year (from Discovery):

I'm not saying anything new here, but the whole idea behind climate change is that it's happening to the entire planet. It takes years, even decades to move the needle on Earth's climate. Meanwhile, heat waves, cold snaps, droughts, and snowstorms come and go. As this piece in Time points out "Weather is what will happen next weekend; climate is what will happen over the next decades and centuries." Again, old news.

And yet, we routinely conflate current and near-term weather conditions with what's happening to the global climate. It's exactly the wrong thing to do, and yet we do it every day. Why? Because, let's be honest, everyone enjoys complaining about the weather.

That's completely fine: getting frustrated about something that is utterly out of your control and can ruin your day makes sense -- like a mysterious charge on your credit card bill, say.

But statements about fickle weather have little place in the discussion about large-scale climate change. Studies do suggest more stormy weather is possible as the atmosphere becomes supercharged with moisture due to global warming. And if parsed just right, good arguments can be made that explain short-term weather in context of long-term climate records.

So if you want to have a rational fact based conversation about why we're having all this wacky weather, here are a few key points that scientists keep saying again and again:

The past decade was the warmest on record and that the Earth has been growing warmer over the last 50 years (source: More than 300 scientists from 160 research groups in 48 countries contributed to this NOAA report)

Analysis of global surface temperatures by NASA scientists finds 2009 was tied for the second warmest since 1880. In the Southern Hemisphere, 2009 was the warmest year on record. (source: NASA, and this is despite the crazy weather from El Nino)

Global precipitation in 2010 was well above the 1961–1990 average, ranking as the wettest on record since 1900. (source)
Rising Arctic temperatures have reduced floating ice cover by 20 percent over the last three decades.
December 2010 had the lowest ice extent for the month since the beginning of satellite records. The linear rate of decline for the month is –3.5% per decade. (source NSIDC)
This past year the arctic had the warmest waters they've had in the past 2000 years, and the scientists who wrote the study add: "On a scale of 2,000 years, it stands out dramatically as something that does not look natural."

Beginning to see the big picture? So now back to the wacky weather, most scientists agree that an increase in the amount and severity of storms, snow storms and other bad weather is completely consistent with their climate models and studies...and it's only going to get worse as the earth warms. We're feeling the effects of a 1 degree warming so far, and scientists say that we're looking at 4-5 degrees even if we do nothing because of the greenhouse gases we've already released.

To break it down even further, when we stop complaining about the weather we can begin to explain the wacky weather using science. A warmer global temperature means more water exists on Earth as water vapor, which means more and more severe precipitation. Not that complicated is it? Here's another interesting part which explains why all these wacky effects are compounded even further:

The recent rapid melting of sea ice in the arctic (see facts above) is creating unusually high pressures that are changing the jet streams. Similarly Britain saw one of its worst winters ever, which scientists say is not only consistent with the climate models, it's further proof of global climate change.

Counterintuitive but true, say scientists: a string of freezing European winters scattered over the last decade has been driven in large part by global warming.
The culprit, according to a new study, is the Arctic's receding surface ice, which at current rates of decline could disappear entirely during summer months by century's end.
The mechanism uncovered triples the chances that future winters in Europe and north Asia will be similarly inclement, the study reports.

The only thing finger we should be pointing at Al Gore is that he should not have called it global warming (even though that's what's happening), it should be called climate change. Because so many people don't know that there's a difference between weather and climate.

Porter on Rethinking Business and Society

Michael Porter is probably the most cited and esteemed philosopher of business and economics. My BU MBA classmates thought of him like a rockstar, and his accolade is known to anyone who has ever read books on business theory. Recently, Porter has been speaking out on the need to rethink the wedge between business and society that people perceive:

“Increasingly companies are being perceived as creating profits at the expense of the community… We need to think differently: what’s good for society is actually good for business.”

In the recently-published paper, Rethinking Capitalism, Professor Porter recommended “creating shared value” for both businesses and society.

This Youtube video offers specific examples of shared value, such as fair trade, corporate social responsibility, and expansion of value. He also addresses the rejection of corporate social responsibility in a way that links personal responsibility to the responsibility of shareholders.

“By actually creating products that are not just dealing with contrived needs or trying to force products onto the customer… If we create products that are actually ‘good’ for the customer – nutritionally good, environmentally good, help them save, help them raise their family in a better way – actually that’s the right way to make economic profit.”

Communication Capacity and and Expectations

We're connected all the time. The internet is usually within our reach, or in some cases our pocket, at all hours of the day. When cellphones first became ubiquitous, it meant that everyone was reachable at any time. But was that really the case, or was that our expectation? When my cell became my only telephony device after I gave up my landline, I would purposefully silence my phone when I needed to "unplug." It's just like when you are in a play or a movie theater -- sometimes it's healthier to be in a "do not disturb" mode than connected all the time. Now that mobile web technology is practically ubiquitous, the various modes of communication conflate our expectations of always being connected: through chat, instant messenger, Facebook and other non-telephony comms.

Does anyone reminisce on the days when we had to leave messages on answering machines? Recorded on cassette tapes??!! There was something nice that happened in between the time it took go to get a message: you could sort your inbox and prioritize the messenger most important to you. Most modern forms of electronic communication carry the expectation of immediate response -- keeping us more connected, but not necessarily helping us communicate better. It's easy to forget that when we text or msg, the expression is so easily lost.

End of The Analog Film Era

2010 Marks the end of the use of Kodachrome. I was lucky enough to shoot on Kodachrome while studying film at the University of Michigan. When I look at the images crafted from the chemical film process and compare them to the most advanced digital cameras today, I still prefer the old analog way. It's not about a difference in quality (though one could argue so), rather that film has a majestic, almost magical process which was heightened by the delay of instant gratification -- it requires a process to see what's "in the can." My first New Year's resolution is to shoot more analog film...if I can find any rolls left! Click the text below to lament this beautiful (now) extinct analog photography.

Today is the day that Dwayne’s Photo in Parsons, Kansas, the last lab on the planet to process Kodachrome, stops developing the iconic film forever. When Kodak stopped producing the film last year, they gave me the last roll. When I finished shooting the final frames, I hand-delivered it to Parsons. Here are a few of those last 36 frames.

Unplugging for Self-reflection

This fall, I've been lucky enough to take advantage of free yoga classes offered around Princeton. Starting each Sunday with sun salutations and the wave-like sounds of collective breathing is a wonderful way to wind down the weekends. I only wish I had discovered these free classes earlier. Even when I feel lazy all weekend, post-yoga Sundays always feel productive, grounding, and introspective.

At a recent class, the instructor talked about how our moods affect people in close proximity. When someone enters a room feeling sad or angry, their negative energy can be disruptive and affects others. Conversely, when someone is at peace, that stillness does not always pass on to others. Why do we let restlessness have such an immediate effect on our moods and yet we discount peace? Perhaps it's human nature to focus on conflict rather than passivity. We always have a choice whether to focus inward or to reflect the feelings of others. When we practice yoga, we learn to let thoughts happen without judging. So perhaps we can also learn to reflect peoples' peace in any situation -- it's all a matter of how we choose to focus internally.

Climate Change - Serious Discussion of Options

Bjorn Lomborg is asking some tough questions about the answer to Climate Change problems. His recent film, "Cool It" based on one of his books is the most sobering discussion of the correct actions to take. The key take-away: We need to think more holistically about the appropriate solutions to curb the effects of climate change by having a rational focused conversations examining the costs and benefits of different approaches. For example:

Right now it costs about $20 to cut a ton of carbon dioxide, but the benefits are only around $2. Maybe we shouldn't focus so much on cutting carbon, rather let's focus on cutting the cost of cutting CO2.

I'm with Bjorn on this. Forget trying to legislate global solutions that won't give us the benefit we need, let's focus on driving innovation and becoming leaders of alternative energy by spending siginificantly more on R&D.

Forrester's latest findings suggest that information workers have a ripe opportunity to embed sustainability into domains outside of IT. For years I've been struggling how to push the influence of the Green IT group beyond infrastructure optimization toward business process change. It struck me that we should be applying the core idea of sustainable practice -- a cyclical system that produces no waste -- to business process itself. It's not like this is a new idea, as anyone with Six Sigma experience can attest to. However the shift in thinking that might be significant is not to continue to eliminate waste in a process (a la Kazien / Six Sigma) but to redesign the process to that low value work can be recycled into something useful.

A good place to start is to begin measuring the value of all work we do, even the mundane information tasks such as search, email & scheduling, and troubleshooting.

He has a Linked-In account because it represents a single facet of his identity (his work self, experience and career aspirations) but feels no need to put his social self on the web. Despite recent concerns of my own about Facebook's increasingly devious practices of changing privacy rights and selling personal info, I feel locked in. Many of us feel that without Facebook we would be "missing out."

Did we miss out before the Facebook boon? Is being more connected, constantly updated and sharing our daily lives making us more productive? more social? All great questions... Regardless of your involvement in social networking, everyone ought to put some effort into protecting their digital self because the elephant in the Internet is always there.

I thought I might interject to bring it back to two essential points of contention that I've gathered thus far:

1) Is live and let live a bullshit philosophy? ie. should we philosopher kings take back the hill and course correct this slow planetary suicide man calls progress?

2) Are we truly free? Without opening the 40oz can that is the free choice vs. determinism debate, I think it's a good discussion to start with the idea that we must agree that freedom is a schizophrenic ideal that is abused and must be redefined. Here's something Goethe, Hegel and Sartre can all agree on: Freedom is not the maximum availability of choices, else even a slave is free. Freedom can only be obtained by creating the self through acts of identification. It's an ideal, a journey, we're continually reinventing ourselves -- yet one we should strive for if we give up the bullshit about us being born with a self. We're simply a shell that constructs.

And I'll posit a third:
3) Every revolution in history has become the antithesis of the ideals for which they originally sought. What would your vision of the future look like that allows for more people to participate in history? And how would you break the vicious cycle of revolutions turning on their head.
I think we don't need a revolution. What we need is paradigm change in modern political economic social theory akin to the scientific revolution (Kuhn). And more humor.

Images of the BP oil spill are enough for anyone to question our unquenchable thirst for crude in the US. If there's any good that can possibly come out of the disaster, perhaps we'll finally realize the need for safe sustainable energy. Many in the oil and gas industry are taking the opportunity to promote the use of natural gas -- a fuel that we can produce on-shore -- as a cleaner, safer alternative. So why don't we start underground extraction in New York where there's the Saudi Arabia of natural gas? This morning on NPR, Josh Fox spoke to Terry Gross about his film on gas drilling.

Gasland exposes the problems related to hydraulic drilling for natural gas -- also called fracking -- and its devastating effects on surrounding communities. Fracking is a 40 year old method for extracting gas that was invented by Halliburton which involves injecting hundreds of toxic chemicals into the ground. These chemicals inevitably seep into the environment, poising water sources and polluting land and air in the drilling areas. The filmmakers travel across 34 states and talk to locals who live near drilling areas. They document similar cases of bizarre conditions: severe health problems, destruction of natural resources, and tap water that catches on fire. This is a shocking documentary that must be seen. It's going to air on HBO later this month and we're working on bringing the film to Princeton's Environmental Film Festival.

A battle over Proposition 16 in Calirfornia's June election is turning into a battle of David vs. Goliath. PGandE is trying to create a monopoly by spending $35 million advocating Prop 16 which would make it virtually impossible to create local energy coorporatives that could compete against the giant. A friend and former collaborator from NYC, Ben Zolno, is charging the local fight against PG&E using only one one-millionth the budget of the energy giant. From http://noonprop16.blogspot.com/

A tiny crew of concerned citizens with $30, not afraid to stand up to $30,000,000+ dollars, to expose PG&E's audacious attack on free-market values and the choice for clean energy.

Zolno and other locals are using Facebook, twitter, blogs, and word of mouth to counteract the campaign of disinformation being spread by PG&E, primarily over television and radio ads. There may not be a way to measure the outreach of their grassroots new media campaign, but if the massive recognition in both social media aggregate sites and nightly news is any indication -- this is one impressive battle that could call to question the influence of corporate political economics. If you also side with the activists, help get the word out and repost links to their blog and youtube videos. Hats off to the organized power of unstructured social media!

Celebrate Earth Day by Becoming Vegetarian

As I was thinking about what to blog on this Earth Day, I saw a friend's Facebook status which said that people are entitled to their opinions but they are not entitled to their own facts. This statement struck me as a parable for most people's belief about Earth Day and environmentalism.

According to research shared by Gary Hirshberg (CE-yO of Stonyfield) on a recent quarterly sustainability conference, most Americans believe that recycling is the best thing an individual can do for the planet that doesn't require a huge investment.

For example, driving a hybrid car or installing solar panels would be higher on the positive impact list, but these require capital investments*. This belief about recycling may persist in part because of the success of recycling awareness campaigns on consumer products. Furthermore, it's something you don't have to deal with. Throw the plastic bottle in a green can and it goes off to the magic world called "somewhere else" where it's cleaned and converted back into useful material. I'll save the argument that recycling everything does not make sense, especially plastic bottles, for another time. My point is that the BELIEF is widespread that recycling is the best and easiest way for anyone to make a difference this Earth Day. That's simply not true. Eating less meat makes much more of a difference.

Several studies show that animal food production is responsible for 30-50% of greenhouse gases,

depending on the study. Corporate meat production in the USA is one of the worst offenders. Fact: The most serious environmental problems of our time are all directly linked to eating meat:

Production of Greenhouse Gases
Overexploited natural resources
Deforestation
Wasted land
Water and air pollution
Heart disease and health problems

We know that these are correlated. To be clear, I'm not suggesting causation.

However it is a fact

that reducing consumption of meat is correlated with a reduction in all of the above. If every American skipped one meal of meat or chicken per week and substituted vegetarian foods instead, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads**. That's not that difficult is it? Now imagine the positive impact we would have if we ate vegetarian for a whole day, or a week. Still think recycling is the best thing you can do to mitigate climate change? How about the positive effects eating vegetarian can have for your own health?

These brothers from Brazil don't just remix live, they also play bass and keyboards to transform songs that you would not normally hear on the dance floor. I can't figure out why these guys aren't more popular today. The Twelves now offer three mix tapes free on their Myspace page: Episodes I & II, and The Twelf Hour -- all spectacular mix tapes.

Michael Specter argues that our loss of faith in authorities and institutions is also eroding our ability to use science for progress. For example, he points to the bogus story about the MMR vaccine causing an upsurge in Autism that most of still remember and perhaps fear getting the shot. We should be skeptical but we have to do a better job separating news (motivated by fear and profit) from scientific evidence.

Portuguese Kuduro from Buraka Som Sistema

When I go crate digging, anything I find sporting the Kudu label is usually worth buying. Kudu records was an offshoot of the better known CTI Records which produced a ton of jazz funk albums. Any Emuire Deodata, Grant Green, Hank Crawford, or Harvey Mason records you find on Kudu are going to be funky as hell. So when I heard of this thing called Kuduru, I thought that a new music genre had been born from the legendary 70s jazz-funk label.

Well, I found out that's not the case, but discovered something far more exciting. Kuduro comes from Angolan dance music that was exported to Portugal -- mix one part electronica, one part-hip hop sampling, and two parts afro-beat and that's Kuduro. Thanks to music blogs and hypem, I learned that one embodies the spirit of Kduru better than Buraka Som Sistema.

At work I'm tasked with greening my company's IT footprint by implementing next generation technologies such as geothermal cooling for power hungry data centers and virtualization to increase power efficiency. In my home, however, I have my hands tied, unable to make capital improvements since I'm not the owner. My roommates and I have done all the conservation basics: replacing light bulbs with LEDs, eliminating chemicals, recycling, etc... but that falls short of the improvements I would like to make. Solar panels on the roof top my to-do list, but the high cost of installation makes the payback period beyond the reach of renters. It's not like you can just run over to Home Depot and buy a solar panel kit that will power your home. Well, maybe not solar, but wind power?

Over the weekend I learned that home wind power for the masses is a reality! Lowes sells a $600 carbon fiber wind power turbine kit that is easy to install and generates up to 400-watts. I'm going to run some tests to see what the average wind speed on the roof is and figure out the efficiency rating. If we can get 80% efficiency out of the turbine, we could conceivably run all of our home electronics off the grid!

Monday Music Mix - Salmon for Lunch

Over the weekend, I had a blast sharing the 1s and 2s at Madison house with The Architect, aka Josh Vanderveen. Josh brought over dual CDJ's that we connected to my mixer, turntable and laptop for a killer setup. We dusted off some classic rock vinyl and funk before throwing down uptempo and dubstep. Though it wasn't a packed crowd (note to self, need to promote my own gigs better!), we got the dance floor jumping at midnight with some Bassnectar, Basement Jaxx, and Girl Talk tracks. Mad props and thanks to the party hosts and to The Architect for lending his awesome skills!

Here's a fun mix I made, inspired by a delicious grilled salmon dish that took a detour from my belly and ended up being devoured by my cat.

Verizon's FIOS HD cable comes with DVR, and though I rarely watch tv, I appreciate that I can hand pick the shows I want to see and watch it when I have down time. The problem is that my days are so full, I have a backlog of recored shows a gigabyte long. Yet in the year and a half I've had FIOS, there's one show marked 'do not delete' that I've had on repeat since the first week I got cable: Radiohead From the Basement performing "In Rainbows."

Jamie Oliver won the TED 2010 Prize for his talk about Food and education. Most of us, especially Americans, are killing ourselves by consuming food-like substances. We need to go back to eating real food, cooking more for ourselves and our families, and educate children about healthy eating.

Eating healthy does not have to be more expensive than eating junk, especially if you think about the long term health costs and risks associated with poor diets. The academy award nominated film Food, Inc also explores this issue and suggests. The documentary makes a compelling case that the food chain has been artificially skewed by corporate and government subsidies so that the costs of fast food burgers are less than a third the cost of a healthy green vegetable. Rudimentary Science Lesson: Weather is NOT the Same as Climate

Every time we get a cold spell or a massive snow storm, people start quipping, 'hey what the heck happened to climate change?' If you're joking around to make light of the difficult weather, fine. However, there seem to be a lot of people who say this with real conviction. These are the folks who view non-scientific anecdotal episodes of a cold or snow as concrete proof that climate change is a farce.

Hopefully you know that this argument is absurd. Yet when I see 1000s of blog posts, Facebook comments, and news articles questioning the validity of climate change after a big snow storm like the one that rocked the Northeast yesterday -- I'm beginning to think that logic is losing and idiocracy is ubiquitous. If we are living in an idiocracy, then Glenn Beck and Sean Hannity are the king and queen of the idiot box: Listen to Hannity's response to the snow that DC got:

I'm not a violent man, but I've got a hockey stick half cocked to knock this fucker's teeth out.

I don't mean to get off on a rant here, but I feel the need to make a mini-documentary that explains in simple terms so anyone can understand that weather is not the same as climate. Bill Nye, The Science Guy, explained it best on Rachel Maddow's show: Weather is a small scale phenomenon: what happens day to day, climate is big phenomenon: the average weather in a region over a long period of time. In fact, record breaking snow and precipitation is completely in line with climate science. The IPCC predicted long ago that a rise in global temperatures would increase water vapor levels, elevating the frequency and severity of storms. If these storms are indicators of anything, it's simply that we are seeing an upward trend of record breaking storms over the past decade. Hats off to Maddow for producing this piece (and tip of the hat to Jeanne for posting this to FB):

So I am looking for a few volunteers to help produce a short 2min youtube video that gives a compelling, logical, and science based argument about why these record setting snowfalls do not refute climate change. I haven't seen anything like that. There are a few decent authors (and bloggers) who make the argument, but I just don't think they're getting through. Not many people read TIME magazine anymore, unfortunately... this is a great article:

Amanda McCall wrote a great pop-ed peace railing against the recent spread of hating on New Jersey. As she points out, New Yorkers making fun of NJ is something we accept because we know that the things they hate are not really representative of NJ. However, recently the NJ bashing has become ubiquitous, thanks to that train wreck of show called Jersey Shore. I love NJ, even if sometimes it's easy to forget why we're called The Garden State. Not only do we grow great tomatoes, we grow amazing people too.

Food Rules

I love to eat. One of the reasons I work out at the gym is so that I can enjoy my food and sometimes go for seconds. However I've always been a fussy eater. I have simple philosophy for eating that has kept me at my wrestling weight for the past 15 years: eat whole foods. I don't mean eat everything I buy at Whole Foods, actually they have a lot junk on their shelves, though I do enjoy their high quality fish and prepared food counter. I simply mean, try to eat foods that are whole, close to their natural state.

This is NOT a whole food:

These are:
Whole wheat bread.
Brown rice.
Complete proteins like lean poultry, fish, and egg whites.
Avoid simple carbs or processed foods.
No unnatural fats.
Eat lots of vegetables and drink lots of water.

These simple rules have met scorn from friends and family when I pass on the potato salad or refuse the cheese chili fries. Many view my fussy eating as obsessive. Well, if caring a lot about health is a bad thing, then maybe I just don't get it. To be blunt, unless the critic is healthier and fitter than me, I don't feel the need to justify being fussy. I like obsessing about healthy eating because it brings so many positives: health, energy, and art. Cooking has to be the most personal art form, in that your audience takes what you've created and it literally becomes a part of them. Healthy eating has driven me to cook more and connect to nature.

Another foodie who I respect immensely ever since hearing his philosophy in Food, Inc. is Micahel Pollan. He has been out promoting Food Rules which articulates many of the guidelines that I follow beautifully. Watch his appearance on The Daily Show here. Pollan has been writing and researching about human food consumption for 20 years. So don't take my advice about eating healthy, check out the expert's Food Rules.

The Joy of Giving - A Holiday Message

The practice of giving gratitude each day reminds us of the colorful splendor of life.
A fellow Architect recently posted a poem that I wanted to share. It was written by a young man who -- when faced with choosing between an expensive and extravagant backpacking trip to Europe or a humanitarian mission in Peru to work for Habitat for Humanity -- elected to give back to the world:

Super Freaky-nomics Questions Carbon Curtailment

Economist Steven Levitt and writer Stephen Dubner are hitting the press circuit promoting their follow-up to Freakonomics with (the unimaginatively titled) Super Frekonomics. Their last book was notable for showing how economics and logic could be applied to explain social phenomenon. It also received much attention for positing the theory that lower crime is linked to more abortions. Morality aside, the argument seems logical -- less unwanted babies, less crime. Nevertheless Freakonomics managed to irritate both liberals and conservatives, and became a bestseller. Their latest aims to repeat this trend, taking on controversial topics like climate change, prostitution, and suicide bombers.
Since I have started working on a documentary on the subject, Levitt's approach to climate change caught my attention. He sums up his critique of carbon curtailment on The Daily Show:

Maybe he's not just stirring up controversy for the sake of selling more books. Once again, Dubner and Levitt are getting attacked from both sides. However, I applaud his critical approach: It's not that we should do nothing about climate change, rather, we should think harder about the cost/benefits. The effects of curtailing carbon may not be enough to reverse the looming dangers, and are very expensive. Though his ideas do sound a bit wacky, I think environmentalists should at least be open to the discussion instead of incorrectly dismissing the argument as anti-climate change bias. Check out his blog for a heated discourse and response to critics.

Verizon to Get iPhone?

Apple will probably drop its exclusive deal with AT&T next year and offer its iPhone to Verizon subscribers as well, a Wall Street analyst said today.

Google Wave App Store -- DIY Desktop Innovation Platform?

Exciting news from Google. The NextWeb confirms a Business Week article about Google launching an App Store -- similar to Apple's iPhone App Store -- for Google Wave. This could be big.
Wave is a unified communication platform, weaving together instant messaging, e-mail, and real-time collaboration. There are currently dozens of similar collaboration platforms, the biggest being offerings from Microsoft's 2007 suite, but Wave has significant advantages. It's open platform and it runs entirely in the cloud, unlike the Microsoft offering that has resource heavy requirements like MS 2007 Server and Office suites installed on all clients. Now if only I can get my hands on a beta invite to Wave.

On October 15th this year, join us blogging about Climate Change and the need for immediate action. The global climate crisis has been getting a lot attention since world leaders convened two weeks ago at the UN to discuss the issue. Surrounding the event, awesome activist group The Yes men pulled a series of pranks to raise awareness. First they distributed a fake NY Post that tauted the dangers of climate change and the near term consequences.

The ironic thing about this appearing in the Post is that A) the Post basically denied global warming a year ago -- if Fox News was in print, it would be the Post and B) everything in the "fake" newspaper was factually correct, based on consensus research from around the globe. Check out the full paper here in PDF. Next they planned to launch Survivor Balls up the Hudson River.

The Yes men are also doing this to spread the word of mouth of their new movie. Self interest aside, I have to tip my hat to them for getting New Yorks riled up about climate change.

Updated iPhone OS 3.0 Still Lacks Key Features from Jailbreak

In preparation for a vacation, I took the plunge and updated my iPhone's OS to 3.0. I wish I could have waited longer but more and more official apps are dropping support for 2.2, including a trip planner I need. A jailbreak is already available for 3.0 (and the new 3GS) but most unofficial cydia apps do not work yet after the update. Fortunately, SBSettings, the must-have dashboard app does work. I'm not impressed at all with Apple's version of copy/paste and overall don't see much advantage to the update except that I can now run new applications.

Here's what I miss most (and hope that they'll be fixed to work on jailbroken 3.0 soon!):

iTypeFastR - the best custom keyboard layout featuring larger keys for most common keystrokes, numpad, smileys and more...truly enables faster touch typing
hClipboard - clipboard and copy/paste management from a custom keyboard that far exceeds Apple's
Snapture - think Apple's camera app is simple? Ever try taking a self-portrait? Hitting the camera button without looking is almost impossible. Snapture makes this dead-simple by letting you tap anywhere to take a picture and has extra features like multi-shot and delay.

Spotlight is just about the only 3.0 enhancement that Apple got spot on. It basically mimics the QuckGold jailbreak app. I want my tricked out 2.2.1 back. :-(

Get Your GV Number

Google is giving out more Google Voice invitations on a first ask, first serve basis. By now they probably have hundreds of thousands of requests, so don't delay if you haven't asked for one yet.

Today I discovered another great feature. If I'm coming back from work while on a call on my cell phone, I can hit the *-button and GV will ring my house phone. Answering it will transfer the call and I can save my cell-minutes. Also I discovered that GV can save time touch typing on my iPhone: When logged onto GV, you can easily send SMS txt messages free to anyone. Just type in the name-if they're on your contact list, their number will pop up-and message away.
