Jailbroken iPhone OS 2.2.1 vs. 3.0

Last week Apple released the much anticipated 3.0 operating system for the iPhone. The update fills many of the feature gaps that users have desired, most notably copy/paste. However, those of us that like to tinker with our technology and run homebrew software have had copy/paste for some time now. Jailbreaking the older OS seems to offer a richer feature set than Apple's.

Here's a list of features I use frequently on OS 2.2.1 with jailbreak that are not available on vanilla 3.0:

  • copy paste (via Clippy)
  • one touch dialer (create contact shortcuts)
  • 5-row keypad (no need to switch keyboards to enter numbers)
  • Emoticon keyboard
  • SBSettings (one click settings toolbar and status inside any app)
  • Intelliscreen (lock screen displays upcoming alerts and weather)

Many jailbreak users who took the plunge to 3.0 are saying that they didn't realize how useful SBSettings was until they had to use the phone without it. Also I think the custom copy-paste via Clippy is much richer than what Apple offers. I can store multiple clipboards, encrypted passwords, and more. If anyone still needs a reason to jailbreak, check out the video below.
Hat-tip to Martin for making this video that demonstrates what I'm talking about.
